Is your backpack missing a bottle holder? Sew your own with fabric and elastic.

A few years ago, I got a very much wished for backpack as a gift! At first, I didn’t notice or mind that it didn’t have a bottle holder, but I soon realized how necessary it was for me. I FINALLY got around to sewing a bottle holder to my backpack, and I’m really excited to walk around and travel hands free again.

Materials

  • Backpack
  • Fabric

  • 1″ Elastic

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Ruler

  • Seam Ripper

  • Sewing Machine

  • Safety Pins & Straight Pins

Step One

Measure and cut 7.5 by 9 inches of fabric. Fold the fabric 1 inch vertically (the width of your elastic) plus 3/8 inches (for the seam). Pin and sew to create the casing for the elastic.*

*This backpack holder is designed to fit a 5 inch by 8 inch backpack side. If your backpack’s side is a different size, you’ll likely need to scale any measurements you see in this post.

Step Two

Starting at the bottom, use the seam ripper to open the two seams on the side of you backpack. I opened about 9 inches on each seam.

Step Three

Pin the fabric to your backpack at the bottom of the side. I used 2 pleats to fit the 7.5 inches of fabric onto the 5 inch backpack side.

Sew the fabric to the backpack with a .5 inch seam.

Step Four

Flip the backpack inside out, and pin the sides of your fabric inside the original seam. Resew the seam together, but leave a gap for the elastic casing.

Step Five

Cut 4 inches of elastic and use a safety pin to pull it through the casing. (I put a safety pin on each end to make it easier to work with the elastic’s small size.)

Pin the elastic and fabric to the original seam, and finish resewing.

Step Six

Flip your backpack right side out and enjoy your new backpack watebottle holder!

  1. This would ordinarily be a very adventurous project for me on my own, but your tutorial makes the steps clear. I think I could handle it by following your instructions.
